Confab: Drama as Odili denies owning Abuja’s ‘biggest private hospital’

Image
There was mild drama on Tuesday at the National Judicial Institute, NJI, Abuja, venue of the ongoing National Conference, when a delegate, Sidi Ali, said the biggest private hospital being built in Abuja is owned by a former Governor of Rivers State. Delegates continued their deliberations on the report of the Committee on Devolution of Power and what took the attention of most delegates in their contribution was the issue of increasing the derivation allocation from the present 13 per cent. In his contribution earlier in the day, a delegate representing the Civil Society, Nasiru Kura, stated that he was not against an increase in the derivation principle, but that whatever additional money the oil producing states get would eventually go into serving the leaders of the area to the detriment of the people in the communities ravaged by oil exploration. He said what most governors do is to purchase private jets and gallivant around. To buttress Mr. Kura’s posi...

Reps in rowdy session over President’s power to deploy soldiers.

Image
Proceedings in the House of Representatives were rowdy yesterday over arguments on powers of the President to deploy the country’s military during elections. Arguments arose during debates on a bill seeking to further amend the Electoral Act, No. 6 of 2010. Their Senate counterparts had last week Thursday passed a similar bill. The House Deputy Leader, Leo Ogor (Delta/PDP) and the Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Albert Sam Tsokwa (Taraba/PDP) insisted that the power of the President to deploy troops was backed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 8 of the Armed Forces Act. According to Tsokwa, the Armed Forces Act particularly gave the President and a proxy, powers to deploy troops for “operational use”. This position drew a harsh response from the House Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos/APC). Efforts by the presiding Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, to douse the situation failed as Ogor and Gbajabiamila continued to tr...

Ortom, who appeared before members of the Mrs Nkiruka Onyejiocha-led committee yesterday, explained that President Goodluck Jonathan and other stakeholders have the final say on the controversial cars. Fielding questions from reporters at the Assembly complex yesterday, he said: “Before we comply, we have to carry the President and other stakeholders along. “We cannot just carry the bullet-proof cars and dump them at Coscharis. There are documents to be filled, there are processes to follow. “As soon as we complete the arrangements, we will take the cars back. Image
Despite the crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly, the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday said that his state was not on fire, but for the lawmaker of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who are celebrating lawlessness. Oshiomhole, who was reacting to a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, who had accused him of pursuing a vice-presidential ambition in 2015 and thus was setting his state ablaze, said the statement by Metuh was unreasonable. Oshiomhole while speaking to State House correspondents in Abuja, said the PDP could not intimidate him no matter how hard it tried, adding that it was impossible to set the state he presides over on fire. On the crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly, Oshiomhole said: “You ha...

Nyako is a retired Vice-Admiral and one-time Chief of Naval Staff under ex-dictator Ibrahim Babangida. The source said, “The two military leaders took the governor to meet with the President last night. They, however, did not get a commitment because the President insisted that the governor should withdraw his contentious memo to the Northern Governors’ Forum and publicly apologise for his indiscretions. “The governor, who did not appear prepared ...
