Image
Juan Mata opens up in emotional goodbye letter to Chelsea fans TWEET   ( SH Somewhat unusually, throughout this whole transfer Matastrophe, we rarely if ever heard from any of the major players.  Moyes and the United press secretary refused to talk about it.  Mourinho and  Chelsea  didn't bother with it publicly until they had to.  Mata himself was on absolute radio silence. Until today. As he's now been  officially confirmed  as ... a ... well ... you know...  Anyway, it's now time for his proper goodbye to us Chelsea fans.  And it comes in the form of an  emotional letter , posted on his official website.  A few excerpts follow, emphasis added: This letter is written from my heart, and first of all I would like to say that I will  never forget  all the affection given to me by the Chelsea fans. From the very first day until the last. With your support and affection I have grown up as a player ...

The Federal Medical Centre in Ebutte Metta Lagos turns away pregnant women Pregnant women at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, on Monday called for a review of the hospital’s policy that institutionalises only 20 women for ante-natal clinic. Some of the women, who spoke in Lagos, appealed to the management to reconsider their stand on the policy, insisting that it was an unfair practice to pregnant women. The clinic holds only on Mondays- once a week. A mother of two, Ijeoma Ndubisi, who resides in Badagry, said she chose the FMC because of its efficiency. “I was residing around this area before I moved to Badagry and this is where I have been receiving treatment. I left home around 4:00 a.m. but I still did not make the first 20 pregnant women today. “They are efficient here, but the issue of just 20 women is not good enough. They should please have a re-think,” she urged. Another pregnant woman, Latifat Suleiman, said she chose the hospit...

Image
Lagos State House of Assembly, has directed the management of the Lagos State University, LASU, to re-open the registration portal for the over 1,292 students, who could not register before the portal was closed, to complete their registration exercise. Meanwhile, the acting president of the Lagos State University (LASU) Student Union Government (SUG), Miss Mojirade Hassan said that the protest embarked upon by the students to register their displeasure over the closure of the registration portal, was hijacked by unknown hoodlums. This came barely 24 hours after the students went on rampage, destroying the school’s property, burning tyres on the expressway and disrupting the second semester examinations of the 2012/2013 academic session. The House gave the d...

Human Trafficking In Nigeria(a must read)

Inside Nigeria’s Ruthless Human Trafficking Mafia Six out of 10 people who are trafficked to the West are Nigerians. PREMIUM TIMES investigative reporter, Tobore Ovuorie, was motivated by years of research into the plight of trafficked women in the country, as well as the loss of a friend, to go undercover in a multi-billion dollar criminal enterprise. She emerged, bruised and beaten but thankfully alive, after witnessing orgies, big money deals in jute bags, police-supervised pickpocketing, beatings and even murder. This is her story. We are 10 at the boot camp: Adesuwa, Isoken, Lizzy, Mairo, Adamu, Ini, Tessy, Omai, Sammy and I. We have travelled together in a 14 seater bus from Lagos, hoping to arrive in Italy soon. We are eager to get to the ‘next level’ as it is called: from local prostitution to hopefully earning big bucks abroad. But first, it turns out, we have to pass through ‘training’ in this massive secluded compound guarded by armed military men, far from any other...

Use of camouflage: Letter to Nigerian celebrities didn’t emanate from us, says Nigerian Army

Image
Only Daddy Showkey has taken permission to wear the Army camouflage before. The Nigerian Army has denied sending out a letter to Nigerian musicians, cautioning against wearing the army camouflage. In a telephone chat with PREMIUM TIMES, the Army spokesperson, Olajide Laleye, a Brigadier General, said the letter, which circulated on the internet early this week, wasn’t from the Army. The letter asked Nigerian celebrities to stop using the military wear in music videos, photo-shoots and concerts and even pointed out that some of the celebrity smoked marijuana while wearing the camouflage. Mr. Laleye, however, concurred that it was indeed a crime for civilians to wear the camouflage or any other uniform of the Nigerian Army. “The letter isn’t from the Army and I am not aware if we wrote any. But there is a law which prohibits all civilians from wearing the Army camouflage and this law binds the celebrities too,” Mr. Laleye said. He added that permits were nevertheless is...

Nadal Cruises Past Federer, Reaches His 19th Majors Final in Melbourne

Image
Top seed Rafael Nadal dominated his semi-final clash against old rival Roger Federer to book his third appearance in the Australian Open final on Friday. The Spaniard played his best tennis so far in the tournament on his way to claiming a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-3 win, extending his winning run over the Swiss in majors to six straight matches. The victory also increased his career head-to-head wins over Federer to 23-10. The 27-year-old Marjocan will look to continue his dominance over Federer’s compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in Sunday’s final at the Rod Laver Arena and also add to his 13 Grand Slam title. The Swiss Sixth seed, who also lost in the 2012 semi-final to Nadal, led the winner count in the opening set, coming up with ten winners to Nadal’s six but his 24 unforced error counts affected his momentum, nine more than Nadal’s. Federer made away with two break points in the seventh game and another in the ninth when the Spaniard sent a forehand long. Several errors from the...

“We gave Mata permission to have a medical with United, it was a good offer” – Mourinho

Image
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho at his Friday’s news conference, confirmed that Juan Mata is set to join Manchester United. He said: “Things are going in a good direction. We allow Juan to travel and have the medical with United. Things are really going into a good direction. I think sooner rather than later things will be done.” On why he decided to allow the Spaniard leave Stamford Bridge, he said: “I think this club is a special club and it cares for people. It is very respectful of its players and especially those who wrote history and Juan is one of these. “This is a fantastic opportunity for him. Another big club wants him in the country he want to stay in, has made the right offer for him, so, although lots of clubs feel you should not sell to rivals, we are different. “The player deserves respect and to play and because the offer is right, we allow him to negotiate, but we don’t close the door.” The former Real Madrid manager, also said that it was good that the 2...

Wenger Questions Mata’s Move to Manchester United.

Image
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he “understands why” Chelsea have decided to sell midfielder Juan Mata to Manchester United at this time of the season and not earlier. Chelsea lies third on the Premier League standing, two points behind leaders Arsenal and have played United twice this season. Arsenal still has a game against United, so also second-placed Manchester City. “Maybe the rules should be adapted for more fairness,” said Wenger. “It opens up questions about the dates of this transfer window.” Arsene Wenger Says the Antecedents Surrounding Mata’s Proposed Move to Old Trafford Calls for Fairness in the Timing of the January Transfer Window. CHAN 2014: Caf to look at regulation changes

Image
The Confederation of African Football says it will introduce new rules for future Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). “We shall make sure nations that host the CHAN event suspend the League for the entire time,” Caf’s secretary general, Hicham El Amrani, said. The Premier Soccer League has continued in South Africa as they host the current CHAN, the tournament for locally-based players. South Africa, who were knocked out in the group stages, were unable to field their strongest team as clubs refused to release all their players. “And teams that refuse to allow their players to feature for the national team in that host country will have those players suspended,” Amrani added. “We are going to sit as Caf and make certain tough decisions on future hosts because this will help the championship to be better organized. “It will also ensure we have a high level of competition instead of some teams undermining it.” Rwanda are due to host the 4th edition of CHAN in 2016. ...
