Frequent anger damages the heart –Study

Image
If you are one of those that yell and smash things around at every little provocation or get repeatedly furious at every turn of event on a daily basis? then it’s time to keep that temper in check – at least for the sake of your heart! A new study found people who experience severe anger outbursts more at risk for stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular disease, after two hours of the outburst, compared to those who remained calm. The research published recently in the European Heart Journal, analyzed nine studies of anger outbursts where patients who had had heart attacks, stroke and related problems were reported for over two decades. The studies found that in the two hours after an outburst of anger, the relative risk of heart attack and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) – when the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood, increased by nearly five times, while the risk of ischemic stroke and cardiac arrhythmia increased by more than three times. Jonathan’s eligibility suit goes to Appeal Court .

Image
A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, granted an order of referral of the suit challenging the eligibility of President Goodluck Jonathan to re-contest in the March 28 election to the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal. The trial judge, Justice Abubakar Ramat Mohammed, granted the referral order to the appellate court for the interpretation of Sections 135 (2)(a)(b) and 137(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution as amended as it relates to tenure of a president. Two plaintiffs, who claimed to be presidential aspirants – Adejumo Ajagbe and Olatoye Wahab, had approached the court seeking the referral of their suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility on the grounds that the suit raised, “a substantial question of law” which the Court of Appeal has to make pronouncement on. But the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Bello Adoke, who is one of the two defendants in the suit, opposed the application. Represented in the matter by Kenechucku No...

We’ ll crush Boko Haram in 6 weeks—Dasuki

Image
Nigeria on Monday vowed to crush Boko Haram within six weeks as its leader warned a new regional fighting force “will not achieve anything” and the rebels launched fresh cross-border attacks. National Security Advisor Sambo Dasuki, who this weekend secured a delay to Nigeria’s presidential elections, said “all known Boko Haram camps will be taken out” by the time of the rescheduled vote. “They won’t be there. They will be dismantled,” he told AFP in an interview when asked what gains could be made against the Islamists before the new polling date of March 28. Nigeria has previously set deadlines to defeat the insurgents that have come and gone. But Dasuki said that even if the goal was not achieved “the situation then would surely be conducive enough for elections”, with no need for a further postponement to voting. Greater regional co-operation made it more likely that the rebels, whose fight to create a hardline Islamic state has claimed more than 13,000 lives si...

Another poll delay’ll amount to a coup – Buhari

Image
The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has warned that further postponement of the March 28 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission will amount to “a civilian and military coup.” While advising INEC to take note of its constitutional limitations, he also ruled out participation in any election debate following the postponement of the elections. The former Head of State, sounded the warning in an interview with journalists on Monday in Abuja during a courtesy call on him by the first elected President of Malawi and Leader of the Commonwealth Election Observers Group, Dr. Bakili Muluzi. He said, “We told them about the change in the dates of elections and the constitutional limitations of INEC. That is the last card for INEC and they cannot delay the elections anymore. So, it is up to the government to facilitate a free, fair and credible election. “If they fail to do that then, they will be i...

Parties kick as plot to sack Jega thickens !

Image
The plot to sack the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, is gathering momentum, The PUNCH investigations have revealed. Jega’s tenure ends on June 30 but his traducers, especially some Peoples Democratic Party members, are already compiling what they described as his ‘sins’ to ensure that he proceeds on terminal leave before the March 28 and April 11 elections. Findings on Monday revealed that the “sins,”   include alleged transfer of some INEC officials considered close to them   out of their departments where their input might not be useful in the conduct of the elections. It was also gathered that the PDP members, who are close to the Presidency, feel   that Jega   is   becoming unapproachable on issues. A source in the Presidency, who did not want his name in print,   said that the reason the INEC boss gave for the postponement of the elections had negatively...
