The cause of the explosion is still unclear as a resident said it could have been caused by a bomb or dynamites used in blasting rocks in the area. The explosion has caused panic in Kurudu, Jikoyi and other adjoining areas as residents scampered for safety. A resident of an Army Estate in Kurudu, said that soldiers simply locked the gate and prevented anyone from going out upon hearing the loud explosion.

‘Missing $20 billion’: Nigerian Senate clears Alison-Madueke, says no money missing

Image
The Senate committee says suspended CBN Governor Sanusi lied The Nigerian Senate has rejected claims by the suspended governor of the Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi, that at least $20 billion (N3.2 trillion) in oil receipts were not paid into the government treasury by state oil company, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. The Senate’s finance committee, which probed the allegation, said Wednesday it found no evidence indicating that the huge sum was diverted or stolen, and described Mr. Sanusi’s claim as “incorrect” and “misleading”. “There was never any unremitted $49.8 billion,” the committee headed by Ahmed Makarfi, said. The report will be discussed on a later date by the entire Senate. In a leaked memo to President Goodluck Jonathan September 2013, Mr. Sanusi said the Central Bank had found out that as much as $49.8 billion oil receipts had been cornered by state officials. He later admitted the figure was less, but said it would not be less than $20 bi...

N100m Pension Bill: Akpabio Has Breached His Constitutional Oath

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has described the N100 million pension bill just passed into law by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as immoral, unfair, unconstitutional and a rip-off on the people of the state. “Akwa Ibom must be the only place on the planet where such pension scheme exists. The governor must now put Akwa Ibom ahead of his personal bank balance by immediately withdrawing this grotesque bill,” SERAP said in a statement. The civil society group also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to swiftly investigate the spending of public funds under the watch of Governor Godswill Akpabio and also punish any suspected corrupt practice. It argued that Nigerians should not be “made to subsidise these bloated pensions and clearly undeserved perks. The governor obviously views disadvantaged Nigerians and poor pensioners according to Orwell’s Animal Farm dictum: ‘All animals are equal but some animals are more equal ...

But some of the young men in the village quickly recognised Ibrahim and decided to stop him before wreaking more havoc. Giving an account of the incident, a resident of the village, said: “Some of our men were actually scared and were running for dear lives to safe haven before s...

Image
Controversial Islamic scholar and leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria popularly called Shiite Muslim group, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has alleged that the leader of the Boko Haram insurgents, Abubakar Shekau was being shielded by the Nigerian military. Zakzaky who spoke at the Movement’s 2014 Martyr day in Zaria on Sunday also alleged that the Boko Haram activities were part of covert operation by the developed nations to balkanize Nigeria and plunder its resources. While claiming he knows the hide out of the nation’s most wanted man, Zakzaky said: “Abubakar Shekau is presently being kept safe in a military camp. Let no one be fooled, there is nothing like Boko Haram. It is a covert operation to balkanize Nigeria and steals its resources in the name of search of Boko Haram insurgents. If you can fool others, we cannot be fooled. “They have realised that there is gold in Zamfara and Zaria, Birnin-Gwari, gold and platinum in Sokoto and Borno. They did it in Iraq, as th...

Police arrest teacher for raping pupils .

Image
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a teacher, Olayinka Folarin, for allegedly raping three schoolgirls. Until his arrest, Folarin worked at Calvary Heritage Kiddies Castle, Oluyole Estate in Ibadan. The girls, whose ages ranged between 10 and 11, were pupils of the school. Folarin was alleged to have tricked the pupils into having sexual affair with him since 2013, until he was caught in the act. Two of the pupils were said to be orphans living in His Heritage Home, a non-governmental organisation with link to the school they attended. They were said to have been living there since they were two years. It was alleged that the teacher, who is a father of four, had been using the school toilet as the venue for his indecent act. To cover his tracks, he was said to have repeatedly threatened his victims with punishment and death. Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olabisi Ilobanafor, confirmed the arrest, adding that the suspect had confessed to the crime a...

TEACHER WHO DEFILED MINORS SAYS: One of them made passes at me .

Image
The nursery school teacher, Mr. Olayinka Oluwadare Folarin, who allegedly defiled three under‑aged pupils in a toilet, yesterday, said it was one of the girls that made advances at him. Folarin, aged 38, who claimed his illicit romance with the minors was a demonic attack which had been affecting him for a long time, said: “One of them made advances at me. You know how children play with you in a funny way. This thing is beyond me.” This came as he challenged policemen and newsmen interviewing him to throw the first stone at him if they had not sinned before. He was being detained at Iyaganku, Ibadan. Though he showed remorse for being involved in the act, he intermittently flared up, saying nobody is beyond demonic attack. Calls for help He said: “I have been doing this for a long time. I feel terribly bad each time I did it but I could not stop it. Why don’t you find a way of helping me. Is this meant to expose me? “Some people should just think and reason wi...

Jos blast victim’s last words: Nigerians are helpless

Image
One of the victims of last Tuesday’s twin bomb blasts at the Terminal Market, Jos, Plateau State, Lydia Komolafe, had in weeks preceding her untimely death lamented the incessant loss of lives to the Boko Haram insurgency. This she did in a series of tweets. On May 19, two days before the Tuesday attack, Komolafe prayed for a brighter and rewarding week. This was expressed in the post she penned on her Twitter page which read, “This week, I shall be satisfied with favour.” Sadly, this was not to be as Komolafe was one of the seven students of the Medical Laboratory Science Department of the University of Jos, who lost their lives in the bombing. Meanwhile, a cursory look at her Twitter timeline and the activities therein revealed that she was indeed philosophical as she was clearly not apolitical, as evident in her posts. In some other tweets, the late undergraduate spoke as she had the slightest premonition that she may become a victim, herself. She posed a rhetoric...

EXPOSED: B’Haram next targets…Another University!

Image
Over the past two weeks school officials based at the Adamawa State University have been the recipients of written threats directed at them, but the source of the unspecified threats remain a mystery. The origins are unknown. Yet the threats, rather than being cast off as a malicious prank, are being taken seriously, as word of the letters has shaken both the student body and officials at the school. The atmosphere on campus, and in the surrounding area, can be best described as tense. A source has told SaharaReporters that the letters are believed to be real, with school officials and the student body suspecting it is coming directly from the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram. As word of the letters making undetermined threats have surfaced, rumours, too, have circulated. Compounding matters is that school officials have largely remained silent. Most of the students at Adamawa State University are fearful of an impending Boko Haram attack. Rumors are being taken serious...

How to identify a suicide bomber .

Image
Suicide bombing is an act whereby an individual personally delivers explosives and detonates them with the sole aim of inflicting the greatest possible damage, killing himself in the process in order to serve the interests of the sponsoring individuals or organisations. Records have revealed that suicide bombers are capable of carrying out very wicked, audacious and highly destructive acts that are shocking on the account of their specific intention to destroy critical infrastructure and kill mostly unsuspecting civilians or injure anyone within the range of the explosion. But if I may ask, what kind of a person would sacrifice his life in order to kill innocent people and what would possibly motivate that person to take the offer of becoming a suicide bomber? In the wake of several tragic incidents, the government, civil society as well as security agencies have always found it difficult to objectively analyse the causes and processes through which suicide bombings are carried ...

Scotland Vs Nigeria: Police Probes Match-fixing Claims .

Image
British Police have launched an investigation into claims of attempts to fix the London friendly between Scotland and Nigeria. No Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official could be reached by THISDAY to comment on the report yesterday. According to UK’s Daily Mail, officers from the National Crime Agency, which investigates serious and organised crime, have tipped off world governing body FIFA over possible attempts to rig the game. There is no suggestion of Scotland players being involved in the potential scam. Neither is there a threat to Nigeria’s pre-World Cup warm up at Fulham’s Craven Cottage, where 10,000 Scotland fans are expected to attend this evening. However, SFA Head of Security, Peter McLaughlin, has been in touch with National Crime Agency for the last three days after the agency – Britain’s equivalent of the FBI – received general intelligence concerning the London clash. The SFA declined to comment Tuesday night, but confirmed they are aware of the matter...
